Bangladesh Railway: Connecting the Nation

Bangladesh Railway (BR) is the state-owned railway company of Bangladesh, operated under the Ministry of Railways. Established in 1862 during the British colonial period as Eastern Bengal Railway, it is one of the oldest railway networks in South Asia.

Today, Bangladesh Railway operates over 440 trains daily across a network spanning 2,955 km of track, serving over 507 stations nationwide. With more than 75,000 passengers traveling daily, BR is the backbone of long-distance land transportation in Bangladesh.

History & Milestones

Key milestones in Bangladesh Railway's journey

1862
Eastern Bengal Railway established. First railway line inaugurated between Kolkata and Kushtia.
1884
Railway network expanded to Dhaka, connecting the capital with the national rail network.
1947
After partition of India, Eastern Bengal Railway was split. East Pakistan Railway formed.
1971
Bangladesh Liberation War. Railway infrastructure heavily damaged. Bangladesh Railway established post-independence.
1985
Jamuna Bridge project initiated to connect east and west zones of Bangladesh Railway.
1998
Bangabandhu Bridge (Jamuna Bridge) opens, connecting eastern and western rail networks for the first time.
2013
Padma Bridge Rail Link project approved to connect Dhaka with southwest Bangladesh.
2022
Cox's Bazar railway line inaugurated, connecting the world's longest beach to the national network.
2023
Online e-ticketing system modernized with mobile app and multiple digital payment options.
